If we accept catastrophism, this reasonably leads to a shortened view of earth history and a young earth. One example is the speedy formation of stalactites in Gnome Cave, New Mexico. The larger academic and historical meaning of "biological essentialism" is that manatees make more manatees and that acorns give us oak trees and not pines.

Alan Holland (Philosophy Dept., Lancaster Univ.) in his paper "Darwin and the Meaning of Life" revealed Darwin's Achilles' heel:
It has often been thought, and has recently been argued, that one of the most profound impacts of Darwin's theory of evolution is the threat that it poses to the very possibility of living a meaningful, and therefore worthwhile, life. ... [some derive meaning] based on a belief in providence, and hold that we must transcend the exclusively Darwinian worldview if we are to find meaning.
